Mobile management leader Good Technology hired a new CEO, Christy Wyatt, in January. In April, Good also hired a new chief marketing officer, chief revenue officer, and Senior VP of operations for the company.
In an interview with IDG Enterprise Chief Content Officer John Gallant and me yesterday, Wyatt explained that these changes were necessary to keep driving "tremendous growth" for the company as it broadens its focus.
"Lots of folks think they know who we were, because they think of us as that cute little secure email company," said Wyatt. "Part of that [the management change] is just getting folks to take a look at the new Good, and to really understand the power and potential of the technology that's sitting in this organization."
Wyatt has a long background in mobility, but even she wasn't aware of all the different products Good was offering. She came to the Good from Citi, a Good customer, where she oversaw mobility efforts. Before that, she led the enterprise group at Motorola Mobility, where she helped drive the acquisition of 3LM, a set of security features including device encryption and policy-based permission. (She left when Google bought the company; Google transferred the exclusive license to 3LM technology to BoxTone earlier this year.) Wyatt also led developer relations at Apple before her gig at Motorola.
In our interview, Wyatt said that the changes would help Good have the right conversations with new kinds of stakeholders in its customers, including developers. Good recently introduced its Dynamics platform, which is meant to allow apps on mobile devices to share information with one another securely, in a way that's completely transparent to the end user. Pushing Dynamics to enterprise developers is a big job, as is supporting those developers after they've implemented it.
Here's what she said about the transition:
I came in knowing that this is a business that is in massive growth mode. So we've seen tremendous growth, which means we should only expect to see tremendous growth from here. And it's not always the same skillset, and I don't even mean just with people, I mean in terms of operating processes and how we run the business.
It doesn't look the same when you are a sort of a single-product technology-licensing company versus when you are an enterprise solutions company. It has big implications. It has implications for the kinds of customer conversations, when we're talking to them about software development and business transformation. It's not always the same people even in the organization that we're having those conversations with versus the folks that would be buying a mobile management solution. So we're at a different level within those customer conversations. It has big implications on our customer care organization, how do we do enterprise-grade service and support for our customers, how do we do developer support for our customers because they're actually building solutions with us? And how do we speak a language that resonates with their business challenges?
Wyatt also talked about Good's overall direction, including its collaboration products and its philosophy on containerization and dual-persona devices. We'll have the full interview up later this week.
